A Surprise Test

You’ll never guess what Miss Chan has pinned (1) on the notice board!” said May to Joe in the school canteen. “A notice about Geography test tomorrow!”
Joe looked worried and replied. “That’s very short notice. We had better get (2) to some work right away. I’ve got so much homework recently that I’ve lagged (3) with my geography revision and there’s so much to learn.” May said that she would go and pass (4) the bad news to their fellow classmates. When she told Patrick, he said that Miss Chan had hinted (5) a possible surprise test the previous week. “It was when she was handling (6) our compositions,” he recounted, “and telling us how bad our work was.”
They went to find some of the others and May said, “I suppose that it’s not at all surprising. Miss Chan’s always getting on (7) us for not doing enough geography work. She forgets we have several other subjects to study.” Francis was reasonably calm about the test because he was an industrious student who worked (8) at his various subjects all through the term.
Some of the others played more than they studied and had cause for concern. One of these was Henry and he tried to play (9) the test, remarking, “It’s only a class test, not a final exam. We’ll just have to hope that we can muddle (10) it.” Francis muttered to himself, “Somehow I don’t think Miss Chan will like that attitude.”
